Knee Arthritis

The knee is the largest joint in the body and functions like a hinge, allowing the leg to bend and straighten. It connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone) and is stabilized by the patella (kneecap), cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and surrounding muscles. Articular cartilage covers the ends of the bones and helps them glide smoothly. The menisci, two C-shaped pads of cartilage, are shock absorbers between the femur and tibia. When arthritis develops in the knee, articular cartilage gradually wears away, leading to bone-on-bone friction, joint inflammation, and pain.

The most common form of knee arthritis is osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the protective cartilage deteriorates over time. It is related to aging and joint wear-and-tear, but other factors can accelerate its onset. These include:

• Previous injury: A history of knee trauma such as ligament tears, meniscus injury, or fractures increases the risk of early arthritis.
• Repetitive stress: Jobs or sports that require frequent kneeling, squatting, or lifting can contribute to joint breakdown.
