Meniscus Tear

The knee joint is a complex hinge joint formed by the thigh bone (femur), shinbone (tibia), and kneecap (patella). Within this joint are two C-shaped pieces of cartilage called the medial and lateral menisci. These rubbery structures sit between the thigh bone and shin bone and act as shock absorbers, stabilizing the knee and protecting the articular cartilage from wear and tear.

The menisci also aid in distributing weight evenly across the joint and contribute to proprioception, the body’s ability to sense joint position and movement. Damage to these structures can significantly affect mobility, stability, and comfort.

Meniscus tears can occur in several ways, depending on the individual’s age, activity level, and underlying knee health.

• In younger, active individuals, a meniscus tear often results from a sudden twist or pivoting motion, particularly when the foot is planted and the knee is bent. Sports such as soccer, basketball, skiing, and football frequently involve these types of movements, placing athletes at higher risk.
• In older adults, degenerative changes in the knee joint can cause the meniscus to become more brittle and susceptible to tearing even with minor stresses. These tears may occur during everyday activities such as squatting, stepping off a curb, or lifting something heavy. In many cases, degenerative tears are associated with underlying osteoarthritis of the knee.

Common signs of a meniscus tear include:

• A popping sensation at the time of injury
• Pain localized to the inner or outer part of the knee
• Swelling and stiffness
• Difficulty straightening the knee fully
• A sensation of locking, catching, or instability

While some individuals may continue to walk on a torn meniscus, symptoms often worsen with activity and may interfere with daily function over time.

Not all meniscus tears require surgery. In fact, many patients experience symptom relief and functional improvement through conservative management, particularly when the tear is small, stable, or degenerative in nature.

Conservative treatments include:

• Rest and activity modification to allow healing and prevent further irritation
• Ice therapy and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling and pain
• Physical therapy to strengthen surrounding muscles, improve flexibility, and restore normal joint function
• Knee bracing to provide additional support during movement
